Bush vs Reality

This time Reality wins!

I could not bring myself to watch Bush’s SOTU address but I read about it. I find the following from Alexander Cockburn funny:

When a president who came to maturity making daily obeisance to west Texas starts hailing biodiesel and mumbling about grass clippings as alternative energy, you know it’s all over [...] – Bush fizzles out

From Crooks and Liars comes Keith Olbermann taking a look back at Bush’s previous pathetic SOTU addresses. He so often looked and sounded as if he was reading My Pet Goat to kids from kindergarten. I guess in a sense we all were for having let him get away with so many lies and so many atrocities.

The best, though, came after – when Jim Webb delivered his “powerful response.”

Webb is seen as a moderate or even conservative Democrat, but this was a populist speech that quoted Andrew Jackson, founder of the Democratic Party and champion of the common man. The speech represented a return to the tough-minded liberalism of Scoop Jackson and Hubert Humphrey, but by quoting Republicans Teddy Roosevelt (on “improper corporate influence”) and Dwight D. Eisenhower (on ending the Korean War), he reinforced the argument that President Bush had taken the GOP away from its roots. [Hopefully, our own conservatives were listening!]Jonathan Alter
